Addendum
Just tested the settings suggested on the thread that links to. FULL SUCCESSI tested it twice. I also sent a mass email to all registered users FULL SUCCESS
Conclusion
If you can't get it to work then either something on your server is preventing it or you copy/pasted hidden characters to the password.
